What is Your Favorite Element?

Mine is Hafnium. Two Reasons. First of all, it's totally obscure. Second of all, it is involved in two radioactive decays that help us learn about the solar system. 182Hf decays to 182W which allows us to date the formation of the core of the Earth (4.567 billion years ago). So exciting

  1. I have never actually thought hard about my favorite element. One possibility is Mercury just because it's toxic and makes you act funny but i really like Fluorine because it's used so often in everyday things including toothpaste even though it is slightly toxic. Just posting this so yours doesn't look so lonely, Dr. Ranen :D

  4. Hannah, we also need lots of other things to survive! My two favorites are Tin (Sn) and Mercury (Hg). Pipe organs and cans are made out of tin! Mercury is cool because I studied catfish one summer that had unusually high levels of mercury and because its like a really rad silver liquid thing at room temperature.

  5. Mine is Helium. Because it makes balloons float and makes your voice sound hysterical when you inhale it. Oh AND its a noble gas. With only 2 valence electrons. I'd say its pretty rockin'

  8. Californium. Also, my favorite animal is the bear, my favorite ocean the Pacific, and my favorite cities all look west.

This business of favorites all seems a little reductive, so maybe Hydrogen is in fact my favorite with a little extra push to the oxidized version of a Hydrogen ion in order to staddle the fence.

  13. Neon. Hands down. What would we do without neon lights? Stores wouldn't be able to catch my attention without them.
